The $100 Log: What "Halt/Restart Timed Out" Taught Us About the Charging Flex

By Alex Rodriguez, repair technician · September 28, 2026 · 6 min read · Leer en español

A panic log with no named sensor, three generic guesses, and a customer who walked out. The fix was a $12 part — and it changed how we read restart-watchdog timeouts for good.

The log came in on a Tuesday afternoon. iPhone 13, random restarts for two weeks, customer standing at the counter. The panic string read "Halt/Restart Timed Out" — and that was it. No missing sensor. No SMC line. No proximity, no barometer, nothing to grab onto.

Our analyzer at the time did what most tools do with a log like that: it gave three generic fallbacks. Basically educated shrugs. I couldn't quote a repair off that, the customer couldn't wait, and the $100 job walked out the door.

Back at the bench, the pattern nagged at me. Restarts — sometimes while charging, sometimes idle. A restart watchdog timeout means the platform couldn't shut down or restart cleanly. What does a clean shutdown need? Power negotiation, data lines, sensors reporting in. And what single flex carries power, data, and sensors on this model? The charging port flex.

I swapped the charging flex, then stress-tested with charge cycles for two days straight. Zero restarts. A $12 part and forty minutes.

The lesson is now coded into the analyzer itself: a restart-watchdog timeout with no named sensor is not "no information." It's a specific signature with a ranked differential — charging port flex first, then the front sensor flex, then the battery path, then board-level. Ranked maybes beat generic maybes, every time.
